Hitachi was the only other company besides Sony to make Digital8 camcorders, and they are very hard to find. This is the model VM-D965LA from the year 2000. It has some nice features and has fairly good video quality, but suffers from loud tape motor noise, and the image gets rather grainy in low light. Also the "16:9" mode is not true widescreen; it just puts black bars on the top and bottom of the 4:3 image.

NTSC or National Television System Committee is used in the US, Canada, Japan, Mexico, Philippines, South Korea and Taiwan etc. It is inferior in terms of quality of output and was created merely to add color to the old black-and-white television sets of the 1950s and 60s. SECAM or Sequential Color with Memory was first used in France and later adopted by former French and Belgian colonies, the Soviet Union, Greece and Middle Eastern countries etc. A major problem with SECAM is that it can not be easily edited in its native analog version. PAL or Phase Alternating Line is the most commonly used broadcast television system in India, China, Australia, Africa and Western Europe.

If you have all your equipment and software installed, it is a good idea to test before you actually transfer VHS to DVD.

For most of us, making sure our VHS player is working properly is going to be our first task. So, finding a VHS tape that we can live without is important for testing to make sure our VHS player can handle the job without "eating" the tape. If you can see a beautiful picture with good sound, the test is conclusive. If the picture is grainy, get a cleaning cassette. You may have a hard time finding one.

Now that we know the VHS player is working properly. Let's turn our attention to the computer before we transfer VHS to DVD.

You should have 5 GB of free space before you capture analog video on your computer. Four gigabytes is the space needed to capture 2 hours worth of video of good quality. Windows needs at least 1 GB of free space to work properly. Hence the 5GB free space mentioned.

Now, you need to defragment your disk.

Do you know about disk "defragmenting"?

Here is a simple explanation. You install and download files on your hard disk. You sometimes erase or burn files and the do a little clean-up...Well after a while, your disk has little spots of free space. So when you download something, let's say a 500MB file. This file isn't written in a continuous 500MB file on your hard disk. As a matter of fact, your file is written in space available on the disk. 150MB here, 60MB there, etc. Your file is spread around your disk in many fragments. So when you load this file into memory, your hard disk works harder because it has to get all the fragments.

So, we need to defragment our disk to make sure there is no interruption from the disk looking for free space.

This is especially true for Windows machines. Fragmentation is not a problem for a Mac.

Now it is time to connect the VHS player to our capture device. Be it a USB device or a pci capture card. If you are lucky enough to have a S-video output on your VHS player, you should use it. The composite output is our second choice. You also need to connect the audio output of the VHS player to the sound card on your computer to capture the sound.

We are almost ready to capture analog video. You have to make sure that your software is working properly. In my case I use Ulead Video Studio. Make sure you do a test run of a 20-30 seconds.

Make sure everything is fine before capturing an hour of analog video. You are now ready to transfer VHS to DVD.

NOTE: Tripod shock vibrations from jointed rail and passing engines. It's either that or shaky hand held video in the cold. OK, today I decided to take some video of the Toys For Tots train that traveled on the Susquehanna's Southern Division between Ridgefield Park and Butler NJ. I began at the first stop in Maywood by the museum.* The train was powered by NYS&W SD40-2 3022 and Norfolk Southern GP40-2 3010. Trailing was a vintage Louisville & Nashville passenger car and a camouflaged box car. The box car would be loaded with the donated toys. Briging up the rear were cabooses. One an Erie Lackawanna and the other a Morristown And Erie/Soo. Santa was in the cupola of the M&E caboose. After taking some scenes I went west to catch the train in Elmwood Park at the South Center Street crossing. This is an obscure crossing located in between the crossing for Boulevard and River Dr. (County Highway 507). Just to the east of the crossing is the I-80 overpass. Back in my college days I would go here to catch daylight running SLN100 trains. To this day I'm still kicking myself for not owning a VHS or Hi8 camcorder back then! Anyway, after it passed I made my way to the Pomptom Lakes Station. A radio station was there with the crowd to greet the train. At one point, not taped, the engines and passenger car were uncoupled from the train so Wanaque Ave. wouldn't be blocked for the over an hour stop. The engines and passenger car parked near the Wnaque Ave bridge. I did get the train ...
